Recreational Skippers Ticket

TafeWA Authorised RST Assessor By April 2008, every skipper of a registrable recreational vessel powered by a motor greater than 4.5kwp (6 hp) (RST vessel) will be required to hold a Recreational Skippers Ticket. The assessments will test your skills and knowledge in the following areas:

Theoretical

The theory assessment will take about 60 minutes and consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. You will need to get at least 24 correct before progressing to the practical assessment.

The multiple-choice paper will assess your knowledge and understanding of:

  • rules and regulations;
  • international collision rules;
  • buoyage and other navigation aids;
  • navigation lights;
  • maintenance of vessel, motor and equipment;
  • safety equipment required to be carried;
  • trip planning, and responsibilities to passengers; and
  • distress signals, and response to distress and other emergencies.

Practical

The assessment effectively requires you to demonstrate a well-conducted boating trip, including preparation and vessel manoeuvring. Specific tasks you will be assessed on include:

  • throughout the assessment,operating within the rules and regulations;
  • checking the condition of a vessel’s anchoring gear and berthing lines and hardware;
  • conducting a safety briefing for all on board;
  • starting the motor safely;
  • logging a voyage plan;
  • safely departing a berth;
  • conducting a simulated man overboard operation;
  • steering a steady course with the aid of a transit;
  • performing a controlled stop;
  • returning to a berth and securing the vessel;
  • logging off.

All courses are run at our Operations Center, 1 Boat Harbour Quays, Ocean Reef,  unless otherwise stated. Bookings are essential for all education courses.

Theory examination only (approx 1 hour & includes exam papers & GST).

This is for people who do not wish to have any tuition in preparation for the exam but only want to sit the Theory Examination.

The on water tuition will be for about 3 hours in both protected and unprotected waters. When ready, you will be assessed by one of our RST Assessors.

National Power Boat Course

This course is complimentary to the RST and includes advanced boat handling skills and basic Coastal Navigation. It is  intended for Skippers of small power boats, who have recently  acquired a vessel or for those more experienced who want the  additional safety and enjoyment such knowledge brings. Qualified instructors assist in all training elements to ensure that you receive the very best guidance and advice. Completion of this course will earn you the National Powerboat Certificate. The course runs over five evenings and then the practical is held one morning soon after.

Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency Course (MROVCP)

If you are operating VHF marine equipment, you must be in possession of a  “Marine Radio Operators (VHF) Certificate of Proficiency”  (MROVCP )

This course is to teach you how to confidently and competently operate a marine radio. To make you familiar will all situations you may encounter on the radio. To make sure you are aware of radio rules and etiquette. The course content covers:

Making calls, receiving calls, relaying calls, various call signs & distress messages.

The  VHF Radio Operators Course runs over 2 evenings from 7.00 to 9.30 pm  Available course dates will appear in the drop down list below. Course dates will be added from time to time.

Coastal Navigation

This four evening course will provide skippers with the necessary skills to safely navigate a vessel in any coastal waters and covers the use and understanding of charts, position fixing, course plotting, navigational aids and impact of wind and tides. Upon successful completion participants will be awarded a Statement of Attainment which is recognised within The National Training System. All training materials and charts are provided. Class starts at 19.00hrs.
